Q:

Are there discs that you can’t restore?

 

A:

Yes. 

First, if the disc is so badly damaged that it is just unplayable (jumps the groove continually, or is cracked), clearly we can’t transcribe it.

Second, discs can suffer other permanent damage.

  • Dirt can become imbedded in the groove so that no amount of cleaning will get it out
  • A major scratch can be beyond the ability of any current software to repair, and may be so extensive that hand-repairing the waveform is uneconomical.
  • If a poor quality or worn stylus has been used to play the LP - even once - it will have damaged the groove, removing high frequencies or creating distortion.
  • Vinyl and shellac can be attacked by various chemical or biological agents.

In these cases we can attempt to minimise the effect, but we may not be able to make it un-noticeable.
